Moxibustion Q&A

What is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) technique that involves the burning of moxa –– a cone or stick made of ground-up mugwort leaves. Your Miami Center for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine provider places the burning moxa on or near your body’s acupuncture meridians.

The heat that the moxa gives off stimulates your meridians and encourages the flow of energy (qi) throughout your body. When qi flows freely throughout your body, you’re less likely to experience musculoskeletal pain, gastrointestinal issues, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

Are there different types of moxibustion?

At Miami Center for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, the team offers two types of moxibustion treatment:

Direct moxibustion

During direct moxibustion, your acupuncturist places the burning moxa on your skin, directly at the point of treatment. Once your skin turns red, and you start to feel the heat, your provider removes it.

Indirect moxibustion

Indirect moxibustion is more popular and presents less risk. During this type of treatment, your acupuncturist holds the burning moxa about an inch above a specific acupuncture point. Slowly but surely, your skin heats up and turns red. Once this happens, your acupuncturist removes the moxa.

What medical conditions can benefit from moxibustion?

Moxibustion is incredibly versatile. At Miami Center for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, the team uses moxibustion to relieve:

  • Eczema
  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Urine incontinence
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Cancer-induced nausea

The team also uses moxibustion as a preventive treatment for the common cold and seasonal flu.

Is moxibustion safe?

Moxibustion is safe and well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. Although rare, some people do experience side effects, including nausea, vomiting, sore throat, or coughing.

To ensure you get the most out of treatment, your Miami Center for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine provider conducts a thorough initial consultation.

During this appointment, they review your medical history, ask you about your goals for treatment, and explain the moxibustion process. The team also takes great care to ensure you’re comfortable during treatment. If your skin gets too hot, or you experience a burning sensation at any time, make sure to speak up.
